Laya Monarez’s Exhibit

Laya Monarez is a 36 year old bisexual transgender latinx artist based out of Washington DC. She works during the day as an Operations Coordinator at the Human Rights Campaign. Her art studio is located at Hole In the Sky near the Rhode Island Metro area in DC. She received her BFA in 2005 from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. She has several murals in the DC area, many of which were commissioned by the Latin American Youth Center.
Laya is skilled in mediums of stone carving, wielding, drawing, ceramics and mixed media. Laya specialized in Acrylic and Oil painting. Laya’s art work has been shown at the Greater Reston Art Center, Mclean Project for the Arts, The Cheshire and other art spaces.
Her work is influenced by surrealists such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Mexican Artists like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Laya is also involved advocating for trans rights and the decriminalization of sex work in DC.
