On Sunday July 29th, the DC Center held a training session for the Friendly Visitors Program. We are happy to announce that we trained 10 new volunteers.
For those of you who may not be familiar with the program, the Friendly Visitors Program is a volunteer-based program that is designed to provide elderly members of the LGBT community with weekly visits from our trained volunteers.
As you may know, LGBT elders have scarce resources and are often isolated. According to the data of National Institute on Aging in 2008, LGBT Seniors are twice as likely to be single / live alone, 4 times less likely to have children than straight seniors, and only half as likely to have relatives to turn to for help.
We currently have 3 older LGBT adults waiting for friendly visitors. So once again, we have more volunteers than older LGBT adults. Hopefully we will be receiving more older adults soon to be matched up with our new volunteers.
If you know someone who would benefit from this program, please let us know.
