Us Helping Us is looking for an Mpowerment Program Coordinator to plan, market, implement, and evaluate HIV/STD risk reduction and sexual health programs for young self-identified gay and same-gender-loving (SGL) men, their friends and sexual partners. This position involves direct outreach, logistical management of the UHUPIL youth space, coordination of day-to-day Mpowerment program activities, and instituting community norms to reduce HIV transmission among young black gay/SGL men, ages 18 - 29.
Degree of Autonomy:
This is a high profile position, with a moderate level of decision-making authority, in consultation with the Youth Program Manager.
Level of Internal/External Contact:
The Mpowerment Coordinator has a significant level of contact with external constituents and other UHUPIL programs and services.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement pamphlets, booklets, workshops, seminars, teaching modules and other prevention education materials and programs for young black gay/SGL men on HIV and STD prevention, sexual health and self-esteem;
- Conduct consistent outreach to young gay/bisexual/transgender community organizations, clubs, and businesses to arrange for risk reduction programs and prevention education;
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer educators;
- Maintain and supervise a community advisory group and a programmatic core group;
- Maintain client records and data entry into a web-based process evaluation and monitoring system;
- Implement Mpowerment program core elements and evaluation methodology;
- Conduct and facilitate group-level presentations and activities;
- Serve as a liaison between the Mpowerment program and the young community;
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and other program activity reports;
- Represent the UHUPIL at meetings and conferences; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- High School equivalent with experience in health education, gay cultural, social services, or related field
- BA preferred. Experience in community education development and implementation may be substituted.
- Knowledge of health program design, marketing, implementation, and evaluation.
- Ability to speak creatively and effectively to a variety of audiences.
- Thorough knowledge of DMV diverse communities of gay and bisexual men, transgender persons, and men who have sex with men.
